IGUALDADE DE GÉNERO (II).


..............................first winner of the PACE Gender Equality Prize, Strasbourg, 08.09.2009

The Committee on Equal Opportunities of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) today designated the three winners of the PACE Gender Equality Prize. The first winner is the ..............................., followed by the British Labour Party and Swedish left-wing party Vänsterpartiet.


All three winners were rewarded for the steps they had taken to significantly improve women’s participation in their parties or in the elected assemblies of their respective countries.

The jury, comprising Lena Hjelm-Wallén (Chair, Sweden), Leena Linnainmaa (Finland) and Dubravka Šimonović (Croatia), had shortlisted six candidates. Lluís Maria de Puig, PACE President, will present the Equality Prize on 30 September 2009 at a ceremony to be held during the autumn session of the Assembly (28 September-2 October).

Gender Equality Prize to encourage parity in politics

The PACE Gender Equality Prize will be awarded every five years in recognition of completed or current action, schemes or initiatives by political parties that have significantly improved in women’s participation in elected assemblies, political parties and their respective executives. Women still only account for less than 20% of members of parliament in nearly half of the 47 Council of Europe member countries.
